Is It Possible To Regenerate Damaged Cartilage?

Tearing damaged cartilage is one of the most common injuries that humans suffer. It is usually very painful, therefore, it is essential to follow medical treatment, improve certain lifestyle habits and rely on a good diet.

Cartilage is a very flexible structure that supports some weightless structures such as the pinna, nose, and joints.

There are areas that are much more sensitive to damage, such as the knee joints, which are usually the most affected by the practice of very rough activities. Likewise, it is a fragile area that tends to deteriorate over the years, so more attention must be paid to the elderly.

How can damaged cartilage regenerate?

It is considered that cartilage tissue can be repaired through the consumption of certain foods, within the framework of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

One of the most important amino acids for rapid regeneration of cartilage is the lysine. In addition, it is responsible for absorbing calcium and producing collagen to rebuild damaged tissue, as indicated by different scientific references. Additionally, it improves the appearance of the skin and the firmness of the tendons.

A deficiency in lysine can slow the growth of damaged tissue.  It can also affect the regeneration of skin cells, affecting the total reconstruction of the area compromised with some physical damage.

12 mg of lysine for every kilo of body weight, is the figure of what should be consumed so that the body can restore damaged cartilage faster, as indicated in this research carried out by the University of Granada. Therefore, we present a list of foods with a high content of this amino acid:

  • Soy.
  • Cheese.
  • Beer.
  • Cod.
  • Jelly.
  • Eggs.
  • Vegetables.
  • Nuts.
  • Red meat
  • Beer yeast.

Diet, a good ally

Vitamin C is very important for the health of the body in general, but it is also capable of maintaining collagen production, as indicated in this study carried out by the Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene. Oxygenated blood flows through the arteries making sure to provide the wounds with what they need to rebuild.

We need more than 75 mg (milligrams) daily of this vitamin to continually renew the problems of the body. The foods that contain the highest amount of vitamin C are fruits, such as:

  • Kiwi.
  • Lemon.
  • Strawberries.
  • Orange.
